Addressing “Race Correction” in Healthcare: Implications for Kidney and Lung Function Testing

Join us and register for part-two of our equity series focused on improving health for equity-deserving population through addressing race correction in health care.

Hear from Ontario Health team members, clinicians and equity leaders who will provide insight on the historical context of “race correction” in health care for kidney and lung function testing and the need to implement race-neutral approaches. This session will highlight changes Ontario Health has made to remove race correction from kidney care and in interpreting diagnostic test results for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network) has been working with health system partners, including hospitals and community laboratories and providers including primary care clinicians, nephrologists and other specialists, to implement the CKD-EPI 2021 equation to calculate estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) beginning in April 2024. There will be a presentation outlining the rationale for this change, its expected impact, the implementation of the race-free CKD-EPI 2021 formula and highlight the newly available patient and clinician resources.

The Clinical and Quality Standards program will briefly provide an overview of the recently updated COPD quality standard and outline updated content on the use of race-neutral equations to interpret and report spirometry, as well as implications for people in Ontario with suspected or confirmed COPD and pulmonary function testing laboratories.

Speakers:

Moderated by: Dr. David Kaplan, Vice President, Quality, Ontario Health

  • Dr. Christopher Simpson, Executive Vice-President, Medical, Chief Medical Executive, Clinical Institutes & Quality Programs, Ontario Health

  • Dr. Bourne Auguste, Nephrologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Co-Chair of the Black Health and Chronic Kidney Disease Working Group, Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network)

  • Dr. Peter Blake, Nephrologist at London Health Sciences Centre, Provincial Medical Director and Co-Chair of the Black Health and Chronic Kidney Disease Working Group, Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network)

  • Dr. David Kaplan, Vice President, Quality, Ontario Health

At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will:

  1. Become familiar with the historical concepts of race correction in kidney and lung function testing, and its impact on patient care and health outcomes

  2. Gain insight into how race-neutral approaches can be applied to interpret and report diagnostic test results

  3. Become familiar with current Ontario Health efforts to implement race-neutral approaches for interpreting and reporting glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and spirometry

We invite you to join the conversation, as together, we can all foster a deeper understanding of how using race-neutral approaches to interpreting diagnostic tests in renal and pulmonary care impacts health outcomes and why these are important first steps in achieving equitable care for equity-deserving populations in Ontario.

This one credit per hour Group Learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Ontario Chapter for up to 1.0 Mainpro+ credits.
